Associate of Science in Teaching, Special Education, A.S.T., (TTP)

This A.S.T. (Associate of Science in Teaching) program prepares students for a successful transfer into a four-year university’s College of Education to obtain a bachelor’s degree and a teaching license for Special Education. The program provides an overview of current teaching strategies for meeting the needs of exceptional learners, a brief history of special education, specific information regarding individual disabilities, and the implementation of appropriate accommodations and behavior management techniques. Students will also explore the importance of advocacy for all students with exceptionalities.

It provides a seamless transition into the College of Education to a university by requiring a G.P.A. of 2.75 and the entrance testing requirement of an ACT > 21 or successful scores on the PRAXIS CORE exams. This program gives an overview of information and issues about educating students with exceptionalities.

Note(s)

Tennessee Transfer Pathways (TTPs) are advising tools designed to help community college students plan for transferring to a Tennessee public university or select regionally accredited, non-profit Tennessee private colleges and universities to complete their baccalaureate degree. The TTPs also constitute an agreement between community colleges and four-year colleges/universities confirming that community college courses meet major preparation requirements. For transfer to other four-year institutions, contact an advisor at the senior institution.

Note: Due to the transferability to a four-year institution, there are to be no course substitutions.

Observation/Field Work is required, as well as a successful background check, successful disposition assessments, and the purchase of liability insurance.

Graduates from this program may also become Special Education Paraprofessionals or Exceptional Education Assistants. The courses for the Special Education A.S.T. Degree can be taken online or on campus, so students have flexible scheduling options while at Chattanooga State.
