Associate of Applied Science

NDT tests may be performed to inspect for internal or external flaws such as cracks or corrosion, which may lead to failure of the part, to determine the chemical properties of a material such as its conductivity or degree of heat treatment, or to evaluate the physical dimensions of a part such as the thickness of a plate or pipe wall.  Students receive training in six key NDT methods: visual, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic, radiographic, and eddy current testing.  Coursework includes study of the theory behind each NDT method, as well as extensive hands-on training in fully-equipped, state-of-the-art labs.

Classes are designed to provide students with sufficient formal training hours (according to the latest edition of ASNT’s Recommended Practice SNT-TC-1A: Personnel Qualification and Certification in Nondestructive Testing) necessary to earn Level I and II certification in the six major NDT methods, subsequent to completion of on-the-job training through co-op or full-time employment.  In addition to the A.A.S. degree, students who complete the NDT courses with a grade of “C” or better, and who successfully pass written and practical examinations administered and/or approved by a Level III NDT technician, will be awarded a training certificate for each method.

Career Opportunities

Upon successful completion of the A.A.S. in Engineering Technology-Non-Destructive Testing Technology concentration, graduates will possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to make an intelligent entry into the power, aerospace, petrochemical, and manufacturing industries.
