Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Technical Certificate (AEMT)

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Program includes basic and limited advanced skills focused on the acute management and transportation of critical and emergent patients. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician has the knowledge associated with, and is expected to be competent in, all of the skills of the EMR and EMT. Additional studies include pharmacological interventions, tracheobronchial suctioning of an already intubated patient, and intravenous therapy. This program follows the guidelines set by the National Scope of Practice Model and is designed to help prepare individuals for licensure as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician by the Tennessee Department of Health, Division of Health Technician training is a combination of classroom instruction (lectures and hands-on-practical skills) and numerous areas of clinical experience. Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible to sit for the National Registry written and practical examinations. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician renders basic and advanced life support to patients at the scene of their injuries or illness and continues this treatment while transporting these patients to the hospital.

AEMT training is a combination of classroom instruction (lectures and hands-on practical skills) plus ambulance clinical experience. Actual classroom time is approximately 240 clock hours with an additional 72-120 clock hours of clinical experience.

Classes meet either two 9-hour day sessions per week or three 6-hour night sessions per week. Attendance is extremely important. Classroom absences are strongly discouraged and clinical absences are very limited, regardless of reason. Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible to sit for the National Registry/State of Tennessee EMT written and practical examinations.

The EMT Training Program follows the 2009 National EMS Education Standards. Additional materials and skills required by the Tennessee Department of Health and Division of Emergency Medical Services are included.

Admission Procedure

1.      Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and possess a high school diploma or a GED.

2.      Complete Chattanooga State Admission process

3.      Complete all learning support classes (if applicable)

4.      Attend a required AEMT information session before deadline date of November 15 and May 31 of each year.

5.      Submit AEMT program application materials by November 15 and May 31 deadline.

* Copy of high school transcript or GED score

Copy of BLS Healthcare Provider Card

*Current licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Tennessee or have successfully completed an EMT education program within 120 days of beginning the Advanced EMT education program and have successfuly completed a Tennessee EMS Board approved EMT competency written and practical examination.

*EMT’s who have shown competency in basic knowledge and skills through completion of Board approved written and practical examination and wish to progress to AEMT training without obtaining an EMT license shall submit evidence of good moral character (two letters of reference). Such evidence shall attest to the EMT’s good moral character and be two recent (within the preceding 12 months) original letters from medical professionals attesting to the applicant’s personal character. Preferably, one letter should be from current employer and the second letter should be a character reference. In the situation of unemployment, two character letters may be submitted. Family references will not be accepted.

*Submit proof of medical malpractice insurance and health insurance as required.

*Complete a physical exam, along with all required vaccinations and/or titers.

*Meet other Admission requirements as stipulated in the Rules of the Tennessee Department of Health, Bureau of Health Licensure and Regulation, Office of Emergency Medical Services.

AEMT Course Completion Requirements

Students must maintain satisfactory attendance with no more than three absences per semester. An overall average of 75% must be maintained on written examinations and practical skills. Clinical rotations are PASS/FAIL. Successful venipunctures must be obtained during clinical rotations for IV component.
