Institutional Effectiveness, Research, and Planning


09:02:04 Research, Surveys, and the Institutional Review Board (IRB)

 

A. All research efforts conducted at or involving Chattanooga State Community College employees or students must be approved by the Executive Director of Institutional Effectiveness, Research, and Planning.

B. For this purpose, research may be defined as, but not limited to, the following:

1. Project required to received academic credit

2. Thesis/dissertation 

3. Marketing study

4. Project or study whereby students are acting as agents of the College 

5. Survey 

C. Research efforts initiated by or including agents external to the College and that utilize College faculty, staff or students as subjects, or data about the same, must be routed through the College’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) for approval prior to execution. Additionally, the IRB is responsible for protecting the rights of human subjects who participate in a research project.  

D. All research efforts initiated by agents of the College and that utilize College faculty, staff or students as subjects or data about the same, must be approved by the executive director of Institutional Effectiveness, Research, and Planning prior to execution.  When appropriate and necessary, the executive director will route the requestor through the College’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) for approval.  This approval requirement does not apply to College faculty conducting questionnaires or surveys of specific classes/courses/programs for the purpose of improving instruction in a specific class, course or program at the College.   Similarly, this approval requirement may not apply to research conducted by students as part of a course activity designed to practice the act of research without any intent to further the knowledge within a field of study.   

E. The Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Research, and Planning regularly conducts internal surveys and other research activities in order to fulfill reporting requirements to funders and/or governing entities. When faculty or staff present a legitimate College-based need to conduct surveys or to research data regarding certain groups within the College, the Office assists in the development and execution of the effort to the extent possible.
