The A.A.S. in Health Sciences was designed to offer a gateway for upward mobility to Tennessee College of Applied Technology Center (TCAT) current students or graduates in fields such as Practical Nursing (LPN), Surgical Technology or Medical Assistant diploma. In addition, current students or graduates of health care technical certificates such as Pharmacy Technician, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic are eligible for enrollment. This degree program fosters the potential for career advancement into supervision and management positions in Health Sciences by advancing management knowledge with guided electives. Upon completion of an appropriate diploma or technical certificate in a health care field, the student may receive up to 30 credit hours of advanced placement credits toward the A.A.S. degree. The remaining 30 (or more) credit hours will be made up of 15-16 credit hours of General Education courses and 14-15 credit hours of Guided Electives.
To qualify for admission to this program, students must present proof of Education: 1) completion of an accredited clinically-based technical certificate health program OR 2) a diploma from a Tennessee Technology Center in a clinically-based health program OR 3) be concurrently enrolled in a program of study that would satisfy one of the two paths described above. A 1290 clock hour program in the TTC will earn 30 HRS of Advanced Credit toward this degree program. Any program with less than 1290 clock hours or 30 technical certificate credit hours will be awarded a prorated amount of Advanced Credit. Additional Guided Elective courses must be taken to make up for prorated Advanced Credit Hours. All Guided Electives will be determined in consultation with the student’s academic advisor and based on the student’s academic record, employment experience and career goals. 14-15 HRS of Guided Elective credit is required. A minimum of one Health Science related course (HE 103 or HS 111) is required as a Guided Elective. PHED courses cannot be used as Guided Electives.
