Technical Certificate of Credit

 

EMTs are health care professionals who possess special knowledge and skills in pre-hospital emergency medicine. They are the eyes, ears and hands of the physician at the hospital, and as such, they render basic life support to patients at the scene of their injuries or illness and continue this while transporting them to the hospital. At all times, EMTs are in radio contact with the physician at the hospital.  EMTs are part of the rapidly expanding branch of the health care profession known as EMS (Emergency Medical Services).

 

EMT training is a combination of classroom instruction (lectures and hands-on practical skills) plus ambulance clinical experience. Actual classroom time is approximately 240 clock hours with an additional 72-120 clock hours of clinical experience.

 

Classes meet either two 8-hour day sessions per week or four 4-hour night sessions per week. Attendance is extremely important. Classroom absences are strongly discouraged and clinical absences are very limited, regardless of reason. Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible to sit for the National Registry/State of Tennessee EMT written and practical examinations.

 

The EMT Training Program follows the 2009 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration National EMS Education Standards. Additional materials and skills required by the Tennessee Department of Health and Division of Emergency Medical Services are included.

  

Admission Procedure

1.      Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and possess a high school diploma or a GED.

2.      Complete Chattanooga State Admission process

3.      Complete all learning support classes (if applicable)

4.      Attend a required EMT information session before deadline date of May 31 of each year.

5.      Submit EMT program application materials by May 31st deadline.

EMT Course Completion Requirements

Students must maintain satisfactory attendance with no more than three absences per semester. An overall average of 75% must be maintained on written examinations and practical skills. Clinical rotations are PASS/FAIL. Successful venipunctures must be obtained during clinical rotations for IV component.
