Center for Distributed Education (IMC 206)
            Many of our courses are offered via hybrid classes, independent study, online (asynchronous and synchronous) or through the Regents Online Degree Program (RODP) program. These courses require students to be very self-motivated and well organized. Once registered for these courses, it is the student’s responsibility to take the necessary steps to begin the course. Listed below, you will find some important information for these types of courses.

Hybrid Classes:
 (Noted in the schedule as HYB or Hybrid instructional method)  
Hybrid classes are a combination of traditional delivery and online delivery. That is, a hybrid course has a fixed meeting time and place for 50% (or more) of the hours required for the course each week. However, the remainder of the course materials and activities are delivered through the online format. For example, a traditional 3 credit hour class might meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in H-107. The hybrid class would meet ONLY on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in H-107. The “Thursday” portion would be covered online through materials, assignments, and activities directed by the instructor and performed by the student anytime during the ensuing week. 
Independent Study:
(Noted in the schedule as 95 section) (Noted in the schedule as IND or Independent Study instructional method)   
In this type of course the student completes the coursework on their own with the instructor’s assistance. Instructor approval is required to register. Once registered, the student MUST contact the course instructor for the syllabus and to make arrangements for completion of course assignments. There are no assigned class meeting times. If required, students take proctored tests either in the Chattanooga State Testing Center or an agreed upon off-site location. Textbooks usually accompany the course and can be purchased in the bookstore. 
Online:
 (Noted in the schedule as WEB or Online-WEB-Asynchronous instructional method)  (Effective Spring 2011 the section ID will start with “N”) 
In this type of course, material is presented via the Internet. Once registered, the student must access their course online using eLearn. This can be done after the first day of classes by clicking on the ‘Log On eLearn Courses’ button in the bottom right hand corner of the Chattanooga State home page - www.chattanoogastate.edu. Information is given on the logon page regarding eLearn ID and password as well as assistance with common problems, etc. (near bottom of the page). Typically, there are no assigned class meeting times, but this can vary by course. The class meetings, if required, would be conducted online. All course work is submitted via the Internet. Testing for the course is either online or proctored in the Testing Center or at an agreed upon off-site location. Textbooks usually accompany the course and can be purchased in the bookstore. There is an additional per course fee. Students MUST be computer literate, have a minimum 56K Internet access and an e-mail address. For courses involving streaming media, a cable, DSL or broadband connection is highly recommended. 
Desktop Video Conferencing:
(Noted in the schedule as DVC or Desktop Video Conferencing instructional method)
Desktop Video Conferencing - are synchronous teaching courses with the instructor at one campus and students at a different campus, home, school. Desktop Video Conferencing uses eLive technology combined with eLearn courses sites. To register for your Desktop Video Conferencing courses in Banner choose “Desktop Video Conferencing” in the instructional Method scroll box. You are expected to attend through your Internet connection your Desktop Video Conferencing course at the assigned class meeting day and time. on the first day of the semester go to elearn.chattanoogastate.edu and log onto your course. Follow the log on directions. Once you reach the “MyHome” page scroll down to find the link to your courses. Instructions on how to access your class meetings through eLive will be given on the home page of your eLearn Desktop Video Conferencing course. NOTE: There is an additional per course fee. Students MUST be computer literate, have a headset with microphone and have a minimum 56K Internet access. For courses involving streaming media, a cable, DSL or broadband connection is highly recommended. Testing for the course is either online or proctored in the Testing Center or at an agreed upon off-site location. 
RODP:
(Noted in the schedule as RD1 or RODP-WEB-Asynchronous instructional method)   
Regents Online Degree Program (RODP - Web Asynchronous) - are fully online courses offered by colleges across the state (in partnership with ChSCC) with section numbers of “R50”. To register for RODP courses in Banner students should choose “RODP-WEB Asynchronous UG” in the Instructional Method scroll box. To log into your RODP course(s) go to  http://elearn.rodp.org on the first day of the semester. Follow the log on directions. Once you reach the “MyHome” page scroll down to find your courses. Before your course starts be sure to go to http://rodp.bkstr.com to buy your book(s). The RODP information site also has a link for the RODP bookstore) to buy books for your RODP courses(s). The Chattanooga State Bookstore does not carry RODP books. Students should be aware that the RODP cut-off for class registration is usually a few days EARLIER  than Chattanooga State’s and the additional fee for RODP - Web Asynchronous is larger than the Chattanooga State Online - Web Asynchronous. No enrollment overrides are allowed.             A Guide to Courses
            Basic   Presence 
            Are courses that meet in the classroom/lab.  The  instructor will use a eLearn site to   provide contact information and a  copy of the course Syllabus.  
            
                
                    
                        
                        Supplemental   
                        Are courses that meet in the classroom/lab.  The  instructor will use a eLearn site to   supplement the course. This will  include instructor contact information, the   class Syllabus and often  additional handouts and power points of class   presentation.  The  instructor might   request that you submit assignments through the  eLearn drop box or email   and/or take test through the eLearn system.   
                        
                            
                                
                                    
                                    Hybrid
                                    Are   courses that meet in a  classroom for approximately half the credit hours with   remaining  coursework completed online.    To register for  your Hybrid courses in   Banner choose “Hybrid” in the Instructional  Method” scroll box.  Attend class at the first posted  meeting   day/time.  Log onto your Hybrid course   the same  way you do for an Online – Web Asynchronous course.  However,  your instructor might not activate   your course until after the first  class meeting.   
                                    Online   – Web Asynchronous
                                    Are fully online courses. To register for your Online courses in    Banner choose “Online-WEB-Asynchronous” in the Instructional Method    scroll box. On the first day of the semester, log onto your course at elearn.chattanoogastate.edu. Once   you reach the “MyHome” page scroll down to find the  link to your   courses.  NOTE: There is an additional   per  course fee.
