02:21:00 Independent Study

  1. The purpose of this policy is to set forth procedures for Independent Study.
  2. An independent study option is provided for a number of reasons including but not limited to helping a student meet a graduation requirement for a course not offered during a current semester, as an internship, and to accommodate open labs.  Requests for independent study are reviewed on a case-by-case basis within the appropriate academic division.

  3. Independent study classes must meet the following conditions:
    1. The course should be developed at the request of faculty on behalf of students.
    2. The course must be approved by the divisional dean.  The divisional dean’s decision is final.
    3. The course must have a curriculum and syllabus similar in content to the regular class to such an extent that the teaching of the class would not cause a loss of instructional quality.
    4. The instructor must also ensure that the student enrolled in the course receives the individual attention necessary to maintain the highest standards of instructional quality.
    5. All independent study students will be registered in a separate section that is appropriately labeled.
    6. Appropriate student registration must occur prior to the end of the registration period.
    7. It is the student’s responsibility to meet with the faculty member to provide progress reports and to arrange examinations throughout the semester to complete the course material.
    8. If the independent study course is passed, the student is awarded full course credit.
    9. If the course is failed, the student may not subsequently request another independent study of that course.
