Credit by Examination

  1. Credit by Examination
    1. Credit by examination will require the approval of the appropriate academic dean and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs prior to the administration of the exam. The regular course fee shall be paid prior to the examination and is non-refundable should the applicant fail the examination. Appropriate personnel will administer tests. A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 is required of students applying for credit by examination; students who do not meet this requirement shall not be permitted to take an examination for credit without prior approval by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  2. Apply for Credit by Examination
    1. A student may apply for credit by examination no later than the first two weeks of the term and for no more than two courses per semester. Credit by examination will be counted as part of a student’s load. The load of courses taken and courses in which one is seeking credit by examination will not exceed the maximum load allowed per semester. Credit by examination will be given on a pass/no pass basis only and will not be computed in the student’s GPA. A student can attempt an examination for any course only once.
  3. Procedures
    1. No later than the first two weeks of the term, applicant picks up form from the appropriate department or academic division and submits certification of eligibility to take examination to the department head.
    2. The department head verifies eligibility and returns the form to the applicant who then verifies payment of the regular course fee with the business office.
    3. Applicant returns the form to the department head where a course syllabus and comprehensive examination are attached to the form and forwarded to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
    4. Upon approval the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs forwards the form and examination to the assessment center where arrangements for administering examination will be made. In special cases, examinations may have to be administered in the department. The student must take the examination within one week of being notified of its availability by the assessment center.
    5. Examination is evaluated and the results forwarded to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The academic dean submits the examination and the form with a recommendation to award or not to award credit to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
    6. The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs either grants or denies the credit and forwards information to the records office. The records office will inform the student of this decision within two weeks of notification from the office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
